ABOUT PC

History

Founded in 2017 by Rev. Karmen Michael Smith while in seminary, Poor Culture was born from a deep vision of inclusivity and spiritual healing. Its name comes from Matthew 5:3 — “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kin(g)dom of God.” Karmen envisioned a faith community where those often overlooked or marginalized could find belonging, healing, and empowerment. Today, Poor Culture is growing into a vibrant spiritual movement that embraces the margins and nurtures transformation, worship, and justice.

Mission

Inspired by Luke 4:18–19, we’re building a community where anyone—no matter their story—can experience God’s love, find support, and work together for justice, compassion, and peace.

Vision

To build the world’s largest inclusive and affirming faith community, where everyone belongs and spirit is for all.
